Owner Comments:

Defeating the axis powers in World War 2 took the combined effort of all our allies, both in lives lost and munitions expended. As the men went off to war, women worked in the factories back home producing the equipment and supplies needed to fight the war. Without the women working in the United States and Canada to keep their respective armed forces equipped, the war may very well have had a different outcome. This coin, issued by Canada, commemorates the hard work and sacrifices of untold numbers of women working on “The Home Front” to keep their armies equipped.

The reverse design of this coin features a portion of a drawing by Canadian artist Paraskeva Clark. The 1945 drawing entitled “Maintenance Jobs in the Hanger” resides in the art collection of the Canadian War Museum. The portion of the drawing that is on the coin shows a woman performing maintenance work on an aircraft in a hanger. Many women worked in aircraft construction and maintenance or ventured into other areas such as munitions factories and volunteer service organizations, all in addition to their usual home duties.

The reverse of this coin also bears the inscription “Canada” and “100 Dollars”. The obverse of this coin features an effigy of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. Additionally this coin contains ¼ oz of fine gold. Pictured with the reverse of this coin is the original drawing it is based on.
