Large-size Federal currency was issued between 1861 and 1929. In the years leading up to the Civil War, people began hoarding gold and silver coins. An alternative to coin was needed for commerce and large-size paper currency was issued by the Federal government in the millions of dollars to help finance the war effort.
The size of a large-size Federal note was generally 7 inches by 3 inches. By contrast, a small-size note was generally 6 inches by 2 ½ inches.
I really like the large-size notes and their spectacular designs. They just don't make notes like these any more. I am diligently pursuing the completion of this registry set, but am in no rush. Much of the enjoyment is in the journey, not getting to the destination.
