Addison, NY The Merchants NB Ch. # (E)5178 PMG 15 Stained $5 1882 DB Fr. 537 SN 1508/H850445 pp G/75 dtd. Jan. 24, 1899. Beautiful penned signatures in black ink of W.A. Cronk, Cashier and J.S. Harrison, President. Well circulated but still more than acceptable for the grade for this tougher upstate, Steuben County bank. The village and the surrounding town are named after the author Joseph Addison, English essayist, poet, playwright and politician.

Toms River, NJ The First NB Ch. # (E)2509 PMG 25 $5 1882 VB Fr. 574 Rotator SN 6889/T924671 pp D/160 dtd. March 4, 1901. A popular large size note from this Ocean County bank. This 1882 $5 Value Back is a far scarcer type with only an unsightly PMG VG 8 Net appearing about a decade ago. The Low family provided officers for the FNB and here you'll see legible, but slightly faded signatures of Robert H. Arney, Cashier and Henry A. Low, President (1910-1925). Henry Low was Cashier from 1896-1909, succeeding Wm. A Low who was the first Cashier starting in 1881 along with President John Aumack.

Park Falls, WI First NB, Ch. # (M)10489 PMG 20 $5 1902 DB Fr. 597 SN 236/Y189903A pp D/354 dtd. Jan. 26, 1914. The total number of sheets issued by this bank was just under 5,000 with only 410 sheets of $5 DBs, and with a large size outstanding of $1,020, indicating limited possibilities for new discoveries from here. This evenly circulated and well centered example has purple stamped signatures. This YA note would have been produced in 1914 shortly after the bank rec'd its charter. F.J. Kandutsch served as Cashier from the start (1914-18). J.B. Saunders signed as cashier yet didn't appear as Cashier in Comptroller of the Currency reports until 1919. The faded president's signature is that of G. Waldo also consistent with a note signed a few years after production. A fault-free, evenly-circulated example previously from the Chet Krause Collection.

Dover, NJ The N Union B Ch. # (E)2076 Abnormal Border Variety PMG 35 $10 1882 BB Fr. 485 SN 8293/K670677K pp C/15 dtd. Dec. 20, 1892. A highly elusive Brown Back in any grade for this Morris County bank. This happens to be a much nicer example, showing outstanding margins on the front, albeit uneven margins on the back due to a slight mis-alignment while printing the face. Generally decent signatures may be seen aside from staining that partially obscures the cashier's neat penmanship. Signers were Chas. Applegate, Cashier and Vice President E. (Elbert) H. Baldwin. President in 1908 was C.R. Mulligan, succeeded by Thos. H. Hoagland while Baldwin served as Cashier before Applegate. Misplaced Charter number. The Cutout for the charter number was misplaced on the $10 roll that was used between 1885 and 1893 to make the upper left border. Used to make series of 1882 3x10-20 plates from Aug 1885-June 1893 based on cerification dates on proofs for new banks. It is possible that the roll was used a bit longer for extending banks or banks undergoing title changes. First used for the Ninth NB Phila. (3371); last Itasca, TX (4924). Normal, IL Ch. 4930, certified October 23, 1893 is first use of new 'normal' roll.

Lewistown, PA Citizens NB of Ch. # (E)5289 PMG 25 $10 1882 VB Fr. 577 SN 6197/U958335 pp E/146 dtd. Feb. 27, 1900. The Citizens is a scarce bank--this is only the second $10 Value Back to be reported. Evenly circulated and problem free with nice color and margins. Ten Dollars and National Bank are reminiscent of Walcutt's Gp 16 plate note of Towanda, PA (also the Citizens NB). The A in Dollars has the diagonal crossbar and the E in Ten matches the E in Five. Letters for NB have spikes on top and bottom surfaces, but for Lewistown it is layed out in a curve, not flat, with larger letters, but the dangling balls off the T are gone. Signatures have faded away.

Saint Paul, MN The N German American B Ch. # 2943 VAR 2 vignette On Holder PMG 15 $20 1882 BB Fr. 494 SN 2302/E512790 pp A/2 dtd. May 9th, 1883 Proof certified May 21, 1883. Large only bank with two $10BBs and this $20BB. Paper with 2 continuous horizontal threads and Variety 2 vignette. Verticle charter numbers were used up until September of 1890 and the mid way point of the E-block SN indicates an 1891 production date consistent with signatures of John W. Krapfel, Cashier (1890-1892) and J. Lockey, President. Lockey served as cashier from 1884-1889, President from 1890-1892 and back to cashier by 1894-1902. The bank liquidated 11/27/1912 and circulation was assumed by The Merchants NB (2020). The Treasury SN is consistent with 1890-91 and the last use of paper with two horizontal threads and the Variety 1 State Seal with bp 2.
