This unusually named bank's roots extend back to 1833, when it was founded by a group of whaling men. It would go on to receive its national charter on April 5, 1865. This institution was a small commercial bank where only a few accounts constituted upwards of 80% of its deposits. It would finally close in February 1943. During those 110 years, the bank had only four presidents. This example sports dark penned signatures of the bank's second president, S(ebastian) D. Lawrence, and also of Cashier J.C. Douglas.
