The vignette title "Concordia" showing two maidens before an altar was designed by T.A. Liebler and engraved by Charles Burt. On the reverse is Landing of the Pilgrims engraved by Charles Burt. A beautiful $1 note from the 1875 series or the Original Series of NBN's. I feel the obverse and reverse art of the notes makes them excellent historical items to cherish and preserve and also to have a fantastic invest!

Picked up at LK in Oct 2019. Incredible colors grace this note. This is a very early bank in Onoadaga County with just 47 large notes reported, and only four are Lazy Deuces. This note appears as the one listed as VF 30, while this note is not a '35' it's a great example. I can find no sales records for a nice Deuce on this charter. Fantastic pen signatures and amazing color.

This bank was established as a national bank around October 2, 1865, the plate date. Although there are 86 large notes reported this is the only $5 First Charter known. Other Original Series notes include two $1's and one Deuce, while most notes known are Third Charters. In fact, according the NBNC this is the only $5 note in existence for this bank, of any charter! However, T&P lists two $5 notes. The one that is not this note is SN 3288 with the same plate position, B. I am positive this was a cataloging error as look at the serial number here, 3283, and you can see how it could easily be mistaken for a 3288. This note is lovely quality with wonderful pen signatures and exceptional quality.

Carrollton, IL - $5 1875 Fr. 404 The Greene County NB Ch. # 2390
An attractive and problem free example with even circulation and dark penned signatures of Cashier Ornan Pierson and President John I. Thomas. Ornan's father founded this bank in 1854 with the original eponymous name of David Pierson, Banker. I enjoy the 25 with EPQ, lower grade original paper. Lovely note, well centered, excellent colors. All around nice note.

Beautiful replacement to a low grade Brown Back for this elusive Michigan bank. Absolutely lovely!
The Second National Bank of Saginaw was organized with a 20-year charter in 1871, which was extended in 1891 and again in 1911. The first officers were Roswell G. Horr, cashier, and C.K. Robinson, president. On March 12, 1872, the bank acquired the business owned by the president, C.K. Robinson & Co. The capital was $200,000. The institution was located downtown next to the Bliss Block (Masonic Hall Building), where it remained for 24 years. From all accounts the bank was managed conservatively, and reports showed excellent profitability.
On January 1, 1893, the bank absorbed the Home National Bank of Saginaw, which traced its origin to the former Merchants National Bank and, before that, the private bank of W.L.P. Little & Co. established in November 1855. The Second National moved its office to the former Home National premises. By 1911 the capital was $500,000. On November 1, 1922, the Second National Bank took over the Commercial National Bank of Saginaw. At the time the Second National Bank had a capital of $1,000,000. Arthur D. Eddy was cashier, and George B. Morely was president. On January 29, 1929, its name was changed to the Second National Bank & Trust Company.
It seems that a large part of the history of banking in Saginaw could be placed in a comprehensive history of the Second National Bank and its acquisitions.
PMG graded 208 notes (as of 6/1/2019) for this Fr. # with 18 grading higher than this nice brown back.

WI 2 digit serial number given the STAR designation by PMG. This is an absolutely beautiful piece with the sparkle and flash of a note which was printed this morning. It is utterly original, problem free, and hugely embossed, and is uncirculated save for the presence of three light bends which affect nothing and can only be observed upon close visual inspection. It has also, quite deservedly, earned PMG's "*" designation for exceptional eye appeal. PMG's census reports 45 Fr-533 notes (as of 6/1/2019) with 8 notes having a higher grade.

A much tougher type as there are only two dozen $5 Value Backs known on the entire state. This piece shows huge margins on all sides. Blazing blue inks and an impressive title layout only serve to augment the visual appeal of this piece. Excellent and relatively rare value back from the great state of Indiana. Picked up at LK auction in June 2019. Nice colors, well-centered, and superior embossing. Sent to PMG 5/2021 for re-holder and was upgraded to EPQ! There is justice in the world.

Wow!!! PMG reports that 362 Fr-587's ($5 Red Seals with Lyons and Roberts signatures as of 6/1/2019) (NOW: 391 as of 12/27/2019) have been graded. This note is graded higher than 390 of those notes!! TWO $5 red seal notes are reported at PMG 66 EPQ. This is one of those notes. How can I not love this beauty? Add to the fact that I have been chasing Ch #6301 since I love the name and diversity of Mellon signatures. I have a $5, $10 and $20 red seal from this Charter and a $5, $10 and $20 Blue Seal. This Red Seal from this private name bank which displays the signature of A. W. Mellon as President. Andrew Mellon was a successful banker, businessman and philanthropist who was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1921, serving for a decade under Presidents Harding, Coolidge and, Hoover. At President Roosevelt's direction, he was subjected to a grand jury proceeding by the Justice Department (the grand jury declined to indict him despite the best efforts of the Justice Department) along with a subsequent civil proceeding alleging tax fraud (which ended in his complete exoneration, albeit several months after his death). Mellon donated his fabled art collection plus $10 million to cover construction costs to the museum which became the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. TOP POP!

The Union NB Knoxville Tennessee with Napier Burke signature. T&P lists 71 large notes from this bank. However there are only 3 Date Backs. This is one of the three and is the highest graded of the three. Oddly enough, PMG reports only 7 Fr. 596's and this is the Top Pop. Great note!

This gorgeous 1875 NBN from Paris, Illinois came from a last second cut bid during a live auction. The note was ungraded and I knew the centering would be an issue but the grade was more than acceptable. The reverse is one of great beauty. An image of DeSoto discovering the Mississippi adorns the reverse of the $10 note. There are other notes in this surviving lot of 41 $10 and $20 1875 notes listed in Track and Price. All are high quality. These notes provide a great opportunity to own incredible quality 1875's at relatively reasonable prices. Other notes had mounting remnants noted by graders. My guess is some of the sheets were mounted in a bank or somewhere like that. The "previously mounted" noted on this slab is imperceptible to my eye.

Purchased at Lyn Knight auction. The description is as follows..."This note was graded AU by Heritage in a 2004 sale where it realized $4,312. Recently a VF 30 realized $1,057. Check out the charter number, it sounds like a cheer - '2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate'." How it was graded AU by Heritage and returned to me as VF-30. Quite astounding. PMG has only graded 11notes from this charter so not a common note. Had I seen the weak inking on the reverse, I would have probably passed on the note. However, several of my ungraded LK notes were not only spot on regarding the estimated grade, the reverse has usually been a pleasant surprise. It gave me a false sense of security and alas, the party had to end. I still love the note, just disappointed I finally got schooled to the mean.

Forty examples listed in the National Bank Note census for this large-only New York City bank. Certainly not scarce but much more challenging to obtain by New York City standards. The bank obtained its charter in 1881 and took its name from recently assassinated President Garfield. Listed in the census as VF/XF and we wholeheartedly agree. Bright paper surfaces, vivid blue inks, and boldly contrasted printing give this Second Charter beauty the type of aesthetic charm that we wish for all of our VF notes. We sold a nice VF for over $1,000 in our 2012 PCDA sale

The only $10 Value Back reported for this bank. When i received this note, you could smell the tobacco. It was a very strong smell. Thus the yellow color of this note!
