Owner's Description
New Bedford, MA The First NB Ch. # 261 Blue Stained Paper PMG 30 $5 Fr. 401 Allison | New SN 871/A586476 pp D/no bp dtd. Feb. 20th, 1864. This is hardly a rare bank, but this example is one of only two 1875 $5s reported from here to date. It's a bright and attractive note with good color and signatures, along with unusually wide margins for a First Charter from New England. Blue-stained paper was used and this is most visible from the back. Typically the printer oriented the paper so the backs were printed on the side with the staining less evident--not the case here. Columbus' left leg (Viewer's right) is blue and the opposite leg, not. Act date of 1863 VAR 2/Back C/3. All series 1875 have C/3 backs.
