Medal (token), 1850, CU, ROOT & CO. DAGUEREOTYPE AWARD COPPER TOKEN, (Pre Civil War Hard Times Award Token, Rulau NY-731 CU, NGC MS64BN, Cert# 3584243-006. ROOT. & CO. DAGUERRIAN (sic) GALLERY, 363 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, c.1850, Size: 28mm. NY 731 - COPPER, REEDED EDGE. Much Red Remaining. OBVERSE: ROOT & CO. DAGUERRIAN (sic) GALLERY, 363 BROADWAY REVERSE: FIRST PREMIUM AWARDED TO ROOT & CO. FOR BEST DAGUERREOTYPES. There actually were a significant number of pre civil war tokens dealing with companies and awards in the field of dageureotyping. The Meade Brothers had several tokens with a similar obverse design to this Root & Co. specimen, and there were tokens for Scovilles, Fitzgibbon, Jacobs and Long Companies.
