Owner's Description

Medal, 1852, BR, 1852 DATED CALENDAR MEDAL, J.B. HYDE, NY, United States, Struck in Brass, Issued by J.B. Hyde of Fulton Street, N.Y.C. Similar Calendar Medals by J.B. Hyde Listed by Fuld in April 1958 Numismatist as N.HY.10, etc. Size: 33mm, reeded edge. This specimen, NGC AU55 and Unholed, Cert# 3656117-009. Unlisted in Rulau. Obverse: CALENDAR FOR / 1852, etc. - T-shaped calendar in center; Reverse: T-shaped calendar in center The obverse contains Hyde's advertising and a calendar for the first half of the year. The reverse has the calendar for the rest of the year, and an 1851 patent notice by I.B. Person. Apparently Person had these medals made for various merchants who then distributed them to advertise their own businesses. We have seen an identical 1855 medal for T.S. Sperry of New York, and other dates for J.B. Hyde. An interesting pre-Civil War Calendar Medal. These Calendar Medals are usually encountered in England and France, rarely in the U.S.
