Owner's Description

THIS IS THE FINEST GRADED PROOF VERSION OF THIS TYPE. THE ONLY OTHER (2) PROOFS ARE BOTH GRADED PF55 (5/2017). Beautifully toned in steel-olive and pearl gray patina, this smooth and satiny specimen would make a lovely addition to a specialized so-called dollar collection. Issued to celebrate the meeting between U.S. President Taft and Mexican President Diaz on October 16, 1909, in El Paso, Texas, and Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. The presidents met half-way across a bridge that spanned the Rio Grande River -- both towns were festival-like for days. A reception and state luncheon was held in El Paso, and a grand ball was held in Cuidad Juarez. Diaz served seven terms as president of Mexico, 1876 to 1911, when he was forced to abdicate; he died in exile in Paris in 1915. Official Medals sponsored by Committee of Arrangements and City Council; engraved and "produced" by George Larcon, San Francisco. Two major reverse varieties are known, one in English and other in Spanish. Two Gold specimens were struck, one with each Reverse, English piece presented to President Taft and Spanish piece to President Diaz. Silver and Copper medals were presented to officials and guests, with those from Mexico receiving type with Spanish reverse. Latter, having been carried out of country, have greater apparent rarity within the U.S. Event said to be first of its kind in our history and preparations were elaborate. President Taft and Department of State appointed Taft-Diaz Committee of Arrangements; aided by local Committee created by El Paso's Mayor and City Council.
