ONLY 4 FINER OF ONLY 24 GRADED BY NGC (12/2018). PURCHASED RAW FROM JEFF SHEVLIN. NEW METAL ALUMINUM DOLLAR. ALUMINUM WAS A NOVELTY OF THE DAY. WORDING ON THE REVERSE OF THE MEDAL: "Untarnishable, malleable, tasteless, odorless, ductile, This Medal is made of the wonderful metal." For many years aluminum was more valuable than gold. Several processes developed in the 1850s lowered its price, but when the pyramidal aluminum cap of the Washington Monument was produced in 1884, the cost of aluminum was still about $1 per ounce, similar to the cost of silver.
