Medal, 1948, Gilt w/Gold Plate, CALIFORNIA GOLD DISCOVERY CENTENNIAL, So Called Dollar, HK-497 Gilt w/Gold Plate, NGC MS66, Cert# 2521239-005. This is a 1948 California Gold Discovery Centennial $50 Slug Facsimile. Type I. HK-497. Rarity-4. Gilt Bronze w/Gold Plate. MS-66. Obv: miner panning for gold at Sutter's Mill. Rv. Great Seal of California, Helmeted Female Figure, facing left, holding spear in right hand, while left hand rests on Shield, Ships sail in Bay, CA Bear at top. Medals Struck by Irvine & Jachens, for the California Gold Discovery Centennial were designed by the California Medallist Society. This is a gorgeous, fully struck medal with bright golden luster and exceptional preservation. This example is higher graded than the MS65 specimen found in the famous Ostheimer sale.
