Owner's Description
Obverse design: President Abraham Lincoln signs the proclamation of statehood for the Nevada Territory. Nevadans eagerly supported Lincoln's desire for statehood to ensure sufficient votes for passage of the 13th Amendment, and to secure the rich output of Nevada mines from falling into Confederate hands. In exergue, a telegraph key, commemorating the longest telegraph ever sent, speeding the proposed state constitution from Carson City to Washington for admission approval, at a cost of $3,416.77. Legend, NEVADA STATEHOOD / 1864-1964, with the state motto, ALL FOR OUR COUNTRY". Reverse design; "The lone prospector with his uncomplaining burrois pictured as the "hero" of Nevada. While the ever-probing Spanish had not even entered the forbidding territory, and California bound emigrants could not cross the desert regions quickly enough, it was the prospector - throughout the state's history - who proddingly sought out the Nevada mineral wealth, leading the way for settlement and developement. Above the state flag emblem, a star in a wreath of sagebrush, with the motto BATTLE BORN, in reference to the Civil War. Below, SILVER STATE.
