Owner's Description
The obverse design: "The U.S. ships approach the British in the opening phase of the battle, with "ensigns at the gaff", Perry's attack signal. Though his flagship Lawrence was heavily damaged and sunk, Perry transferred to the laggard Niagara, and audaciously resumed the battle with the British though they had already won. The result was to eliminate the British from the western Lakes and ease the pressure of the land forces throughout the Northwest Territory". The reverse design: "Portrait of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the vigorous 27-year-old who built his own fleet in a matter of months, then engaged the disbelieving British in decisive action, The bust is flanked by the U.S. flag, and Perry's battleflag, bearing the last words of his friend Lawrence: "Don't give up the ship"> On a ribbon below, Perry's terse battle report to Washington: "We have met the enemy and they are ours."
