Owner's Description
Obverse design: "As the developement of the city has been so closely tied to the great Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, the obverse design represents three river scenes, each a century apart. Above is the arrival in February, 1764 of the origional party of French settlers, whose supply-ladden boat had to be pulled upstream much of the way over a period of months, from New Orleans. In the central panel is a riverboat from Mark Twain's time, and at the bottom, a thousand h.p. diesel tug (barge pusher) of the present day, with the St. Louis skyline in the distance. Legend: BICENTENNIAL OF ST. LOUIS / 1764/1964". Reverse design: "Patron St. Louis (Louis IX) of King Louis XV then reigning in France, was chosen as namesake by Pierre Laclede, founder of the city with his 14-year old stepson Auguste Chouteau. Origionally modelled by Charles Niehaus in heroic size plaster for the 1904 Exposition, this figure of St. Louis was later erected in bronze as the "trademark"of the city. Our medal was modelled by Walter A. Sinz, N.S.S., from the photo he took in 1902 of Niehaus' St. Louis being readied along with other giant fair sculpture in a Weehauken, NJ roundhouse! Legend SAINT LOUIS / LACLEDE / CHOUTEAU".
