Owner's Description

This is an example of a Planchet. Shown is a Copper-Nickel Clad Large Size Dollar. - After the Annealing Process the Type 2 Blank now travels to the “Upsetting Mill”. To explain the upsetting mill just vision a horseshoe that is stationary, and now vision a clockwise Rotating Disk in the center of the horseshoe. The inside side of the horseshoe has a “V Grove” cut into it as well as the outside edge of the rotating disk. The input end of the Upsetting Mill is wider (between the horseshoe die and Rotating Die) than the exit point of the mill. The Blank enters the Mill horizontally and is picked up by the two V grove dies. The blank is then propelled thru the two dies, the space between these dies narrows as the blank moves towards the exit. It is this action that causes the metal on the rim of the disk to expand and rise proportionally on both sides of the Blank to a predetermined rim size. When you view the edge of the blank you will see that both of the cut rings have disappeared to a fine polished rounded surface that is higher than the face of the Blank. When you view the obverse and reverse surfaces you will see a shinny-clean surface with contact marks and an outer 360 degree rim that is raised to form a bowl type appearance. These are the chief characteristics that NGC utilizes to attribute this Type 2 Disk as a Planchet.
