Owner's Description

This is a 1996P Large Die Cap that is 8.16mm Deep with very interesting Photo's. - Capped Die or Die Caps Errors occur when the coin adheres to the die due to suction or by the presence of oil or other lubricants, which contribute to the seal of the coin to the face of the die. When this happens-the reverse side of the struck coin now becomes the new die face for the successive srtikes. Repeated striking will cause the metal on the face of the die to become thinner and softer. This soften metal is forced upward around the shaft of the die. Eventually the die cap will break off or will be removed by the technician. The inside face of the die capped coin will retain its feature from the striking die. Early struck coins from the hammer side of the capped die will show a mirror image known as a "Brockage". Later successive strikes will cause the hammer face image to fade away. These featureless image strikes are called "Struck By Cap Die".
