Owner's Description

Purchased on 10/1/2011. Julia Grant (nee Dent) was the daughter of a slave-holding planter, but she was quite a different personality. She was a homely girl – and had crossed eyes to boot, but she was never allowed to think of herself as anything but a princess, thanks to a doting father. She was raised in leisure, and she celebrated that fact for the rest of her life. She did exhibit independence with respect to one, critical, point in her life. She persisted in her determination to marry Ulysses S. Grant over the objections of parents who didn’t think the soldier could provide the kind of life Julia wanted and deserved. Interestingly, she was the first First Lady to write a memoir, though she was unable to find a publisher, and she had been dead almost 75 years when "The Personal Memoirs of Julia Dent Grant (Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant)" was finally published in 1975. ---------------------------------------------- Description from the US Mint website: Julia Dent Grant was born on January 26, 1826, near St. Louis. She met future Union General and President Ulysses Grant at her affluent family's plantation, White Haven, where he was welcomed as a former West Point classmate of her brother Frederick. Julia and Lieutenant Grant became engaged in 1844 and married four years later. During the Civil War, she moved her home often to be as close to her husband as possible while he commanded the Union forces. Julia sometimes brought her children with her if she thought it was safe enough. General Grant won decisive victories at Shiloh in April 1862, at Vicksburg in July 1863, and at Chattanooga in November 1863. Julia was at his side as he rose to be one of the most famous generals in American history and, ultimately, the 18th President. REVERSE: The reverse (tails) design captures the courtship of a young Julia Dent and Ulysses S. Grant, horseback riding at her family's plantation, White Haven. OBVERSE: The bust of Julia Grant facing right, including the dates as the First Lady.
