Owner's Description
Purchased on 9/26/2011. This is a beautifully struck restrike of a 2 Ducat gold design originally minted in 1642. The obverse features Ferdinand Charles (17 May 1628 – 30 December 1662) the Archduke of Further Austria, including Tyrol, from 1646 to 1662. He was the son of Archduke Leopold V and Claudia de Medici. His father died when he was a very young boy, and his mother was acting ruler until he came of age in 1646. His reign was to be short lived, as he died at a young age in 1662. During his few short years he was known for having an extremely extravagant lifestyle, having squandered much of his family's fortune. At the age of 18 he married his double first cousin, Anna de Medici (her parents were siblings to his parents -- she was the daughter of his father's sister and his mother's brother). Ferdinand Charles was an absolutist ruler, rarely calling on help from fellow countrymen or aristocrats, and even undertaking proscriptionist tactics to ensure his favor. He was an avid lover of the arts, and was particularly fond of Italian opera.
