Owner's Description
Purchased on 9/7/2011. This coin has a diameter of 30mm and is composed of 83.49% silver and weighs 12.5 g (0.3356 ASW). It was minted in a relatively small quantity of 100,000 pieces, and the same design was also minted in a higher denomination of 100 Francs and a smaller denomination of 20 Francs. The coin obverse features the bust of Prince Jean (later Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg -- given names: Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano; born 5 January 1921) who ruled Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000. The reverse commemorates the 600th Anniversary of the death of "John the Blind" also known as "John of Bohemia". He was born 10 August 1296 and died in battle on 26 August 1346. He was the Count of Luxembourg from 1309 and King of Bohemia from 1310 and titular King of Poland. He was the eldest son of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII. He is well known for having died while fighting in the Battle of Crécy at age 50, after having been blind for a decade. Before he died in battle, he was reported to have said: "Let it never be the case that a Bohemian king runs from a fight!" The coin shows a mounted King John in full armor and bears the inscription below of "26 VIII" (26 August) and the years "1346-1946". This is a one year issue in 3 different denominations (20, 50, and 100 Francs). The three denominations have a total mintage of 100,000 pieces each.
