Owner's Description

Purchased on 9/4/2011. Weight: 28g Composition: .6400 Silver (ASW 0.57610z) Mintage: 25,000 pieces Topic: 300th Anniversary of the Birth of II Rákóczi Ferenc The obverse features a shield within a wreath dividing the denomination (200 Forint) and the date (1976). The reverse features a beautiful scene of II Rákóczi Ferenc (Francis II Rákóczi, b. 1676) on horseback. He was a Hungarian aristocrat and the leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703-11 as the prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary. He was also Prince of Transylvania, an Imperial Prince, and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. From November of 1712 until his death he was exiled from Hungary, spending these years in France and mostly in Turkey. Upon his death in 1735, he was buried in Turkey (except his heart, which was sent to France). In 1906 he would return to his country, when his remains were moved to the St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Kassa, Hungary (today Košice, Slovakia), where he is buried with his mother Jelena and his son. Today he is considered a national hero in Hungary.
