Owner's Description

ONLY 5 OF THIS TYPE GRADED BY NGC WITH ONLY 3 FINER (6/2017). ALBANY BURGESSES CORPS SEMICENTENNIAL 1883 ALBANY, NY. Prior to American Revolution, Burgess was delegate of popular branch (House of Burgesses) of Virginia legislature. Word defined, also, as free-man of borough. Use of term spread elsewhere in colonial America. In this case, Albany Burgesses Corps apparently organized 1833 as quasi military unit, elaborately uniformed; participated in certain civic ceremonies; functioned as parading escort to visiting dignitaries; regularly marched in city parades. Organization no longer active.
