Owner's Description
FABULOUS BLAST WHITE EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE. ONLY (5) MS 65'S FINER OVERALL (5/2017). 100% SILVER PLATING IS INTACT. MOST OF THESE EXAMPLES WILL BE TONED DARK OR WILL BE MISSING SOME OF THE SILVER PLATING, LETTING THE BRONZE BASE METAL SHOW THROUGH. JEFF SHEVLIN TELLS ME RECENTLY THAT HE BELIEVES SOME OF THESE WERE SOLID SILVER. IT WOULD HAVE TO BE WEIGHED TO PROVE IT, BUT THIS MIGHT POSSIBLY BE A SOLID SILVER IF SUCH A MEDAL EXISTS??? Purpose: To celebrate opening of Panama Canal; to commemorate 400th anniversary of discovery of Pacific Ocean; to celebrate rebuilding of San Francisco following 1906 earthquake and fire. Several states issued medals in advance of exposition as one means of raising funds for exhibition purposes; usually sold for $1. Except for Arkansas' Aluminum piece, all were Bronze; some silver-plated officially, others privately. Arkansas medal presented to "home folks and notable visitors"; Maryland's distributed on Maryland Day to officials and others.
