Owner's Description

Bashlow decided to strike a second run of CSA restrikes using the 1873 Lovett defaced dies. But these dies had been poorly stored and had been badly pitted from rust. It was decided to have August Frank Co. make a second set of dies using the “ transfer “ process to create a set of dies that is exactly the same as the original set in every detail.

In 1961 the minting of these restrikes began in Copper, Goldine and Silver plus several test strikes.

Both the original dies and the transfer dies were then taken to the Smithsonian where they are now preserved as part of our national heritage
