Owner's Description

Purchased on 8/26/2012. This is a 5 year type coin of the Italian 1 Lira, minted in years 1908,1909, 1910, 1912, and 1913. This final year example is the most common year with a mintage of 16.7 million pieces. Accordingly, the 1913 is also the most affordable year to acquire for this design. This is a stellar example of a very highly graded coin. The coin exhibits appealing toning, and booming luster. For the 1913 date, NGC has graded 10 coins in MS65, with only one example graded higher in MS66. This coin and another similar Italian coin design were created by Italian sculptor Davide Calandra. He was born in Turin into a wealthy family on October 21, 1856. After attending the Liceo, he followed the art lectures of the Accademia Albertina and then joined as a volunteer the cavalry where he attained the military rank of Sottotenente (Sub-Lieutenant). In 1878 he worked with his father Claudio and his brother Eduardo on the excavation of the Lombard archaeological site of Testona (Moncalieri). Calandra began his sculpting activity in 1880, when he showed his work Penelope at the Turin Esposizione di Belle Arti (fine arts exhibition). In 1902 he established (with fellow artists Leonardo Bistolfi, Giorgio Ceragioli, Enrico Reycend and Enrico Thovez) a journal devoted to decorative arts titled "L'arte decorativa moderna". In 1912 he was appointed president of the Piedmontese Society of Archaeology and Fine Arts (Società Piemontese di Archeologia e Belle Arti), a post he held until he died in Turin on September 8, 1915 at the age of 58.
