Owner's Description
Purchased on 2/27/2012. This coin has a diameter of 37mm and is composed of 83.49% silver. It was minted in a quantity of 98,000 coins including the designers name on the reverse, and a scant 2,000 coins deemed as "restrike" and missing the designers name on the reverse. This is the more scarce version without the designers name. The same design was also used on both the 20F and 50F coins from the same year (1946). This is only a 1 year type coin. The coin obverse features the bust of Prince Jean (later Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg -- given names: Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano; born 5 January 1921) who ruled Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000. The reverse commemorates the 600th Anniversary of the death of "John the Blind" also known as "John of Bohemia". The design itself is a modification of the royal seal of King John of Bohemia. He was born 10 August 1296 and died in battle on 26 August 1346. He was the Count of Luxembourg from 1309 and King of Bohemia from 1310 and titular King of Poland. He was the eldest son of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII. He is well known for having died while fighting in the Battle of Crécy at age 50, after having been blind for a decade. Before he died in battle, he was reported to have said: "Let it never be the case that a Bohemian king runs from a fight!" The coin shows a mounted King John in full armor and bears the inscription below of "26 VIII" (26 August) and the years "1346-1946".
