Owner's Description
Medal, 1876, WM, EAGLE & HERON DOLLAR, U.S., So Called Dollar HK-865A, Copper, NGC MS62BN, Cert# 2514065-050. Also attributed as Dickeson (Prof. Montroville W. Dickeson) Issues Related to Continental Restrikes (see below). Rarity-7, Tied for Finest. Although previously attributed to Thomas L. Elder, Thomas K. DeLorey makes a convincing argument that they were in fact produced by Prof. Montroville W. Dickeson. He writes, in part: "This claim is based primarily upon an examination of the thick copper and white metal planchets used for them, which resemble nothing used for any proven Elder issue. They do, However, resemble planchets used for certain of Dickeson's 1876 issues, implying a connection between the medals in question and either Dickeson or his coiner. (See "Thomas L. Elder: A Catalogue of His Tokens and Medals" by Thomas K. DeLorey in The Numismatist, June and July, 1980). Design: EAGLE AND HERON DOLLARS: Vignette used on $3 bills issued by the Continental Congress 1775-1777 was selected by Dickeson for this piece. Legend, Exitus in Dubio Est, means "The End Is in Doubt."; Obv. Within circle, eagle grasps heron in talons; between circles around border, Exitus • in • Dubio • Est.; Rev.
