Owner's Description

Medal, 1970-1980, Bz, OCTAGONAL KENTUCKY MINE / NCM TARGET, So Called Dollar HK-UNL, Sierra City, CA, ca. 1970s Nevada City Mint $50 Slug facsimile. The Nevada City Mint was established in May 1975 by R.D (Don) Schmitz. The large octagonal format was selected to imitate a California $50 gold slug. There were approximately fifty different gold-rush related slugs produced to date by the Nevada City Mint (Grass Valley, California) according to the Jankowski Reference CD. Obv. Octagonal Bronze Medal, Old Kentucky Gold Mine, Sierra City, Cal in circle legend, stars at sides, inside circle, Mining Scene, Elevated Rail Tracks, Mountains; Rv. Nevada City Mint California inside rectangular frame, round lines from centet outward, beaded border. Attractive and HIstorical. Numerous hard-rock gold mines were developed on both sides of the North Yuba River Canyon near Sierra City. These include the Colombo Mine, the Kentucky Mine, the Keystone Mine, the Monumental Mine, the Sierra Buttes Mine, and the William Tell Mine.
