Medal, 1897, BR, FITZSIMMONS DOLLAR, CORBETT-FITZSIMMONS BOXING BOUT, Carson City, NV, So Called Dollar HK-277 BR, NGC MS62, Cert# 2614046-003. Tied for Finest, Rarity-6. Very Rare, Popular and Expensive in Mint State. Obv. Male bust facing r.; below Robert Fitzsimmons; 6 stars around in l. border; 7 stars around in r. border; beaded border; Rv. Within open wreath of leaves and berries, tied at bottom with ribbon, For the / Championship / of the / World. / Carson City / Nev. / March 17, / 1897.; outside, above around * Souvenir *; below around Corbett-Fitzsimmons Contest. HK-277 Brass. 33mm. Medals commemorate world's heavyweight championship bout held March 17, 1897 when 167-pound Bob Fitzsimmons won title by knockout over James J. Corbett in 14 rounds. Former held championship until June 9, 1899, losing to James J. Jeffries by 11 round knockout at Coney Island, NY. Acknowledged as one of all-time great professional pugilists, Fitzsimmons had won middleweight title in 1891, voluntarily relinquishing it to fight Corbett; still later, won light heavyweight championship in 1903.
