Owner's Description
Medal, 1960, AR, PONY EXPRESS CENTENNIAL, United States, So-Called Dollar, HK-582, NGC MS66, Cert# 2610114-016. St. Joseph, MO to and from Sacramento, CA, Commemorates a full scale rerun of the actual pony express route, to and from the above cities, and involved over 960 riders and 960 horses (480 in each direction), and ten days to run. The medal is silver, authorized by Congress as a "national medal", designed by J.A. Links, and struck at Philadelphia Mint. Obv. Three conjoined male heads, Founders, within center circle, legend around, United States Commemorative Medal, Russell Majors Waddell. Reverse features the famous Hansen Pony Express horse and rider, horse at gallop, legend around, National Pony Express Centennial Association, below, 1860-1960. This silver example is significantly rarer than the bronze variety.
