Owner's Description
David Lawrence Rare Coins - (MS67) Another outstanding acquisition from what I believe is the best coin dealer in the business. This gem has incredible luster complemented by the developing tone on both Obverse and Reverse. As the tone has not advanced in its normal course to a high degree there is, as expected, a general preponderance of gold with a slight level of rose. This coin has very nice eye-appeal even though the tone would be classified by most knowledgeable collectors of this series as of an average mint set level. In hand this tone serves to provide a wonderful enhancement to the original mint luster.

The strike is quite good for the mint and date. The 49-S is well known for a generally weak or, as Rick Tomaska notes, mushy strike. The Obverse of this coin, though, is better than most and is a strong element in the coin earning such a lofty grade. There is a slight weakness in the lower bell lines to the left of the crack in the Liberty Bell, but all the other elements are strong. Contact is not an issue at this level.

As an interesting study, I compared this coin to both 49-S coins I own – a MS65 and a MS66. It is amazing to see the progression in surface preservation, strike, luster, and eye-appeal. Beyond surface condition, this coin has an extremely strong strike that is truly stunning when set alongside the other two coins. Additionally, there is a bolder degree of original mint luster to this coin.

I am quite pleased with this addition to my collection. As I have tried to do with all coin purchases in this process, I have sought out coins that are technically correctly graded and have very good eye-appeal to me – This gem meets both criteria. This coin replaces a Centsles (EBay) MS66 that is nicely toned, but with a weaker more “mushy” strike.
