Owner's Description
Steven Patterson - (MS67) An absolutely phenomenal coin! This coin purchase has a rather unusual story that gives it even more meaning for me. I happened across this coin in a routine search of NGC Franklins listed on eBay. At first I was sure that given the overwhelming mirrors of the fields this had to be a mislabeled item - a proof67 I surmised. I contacted the seller to let him know that his erroneous listing was attracting bids that were out of line. Well, you can imagine my surprise when Steve sent me a full scan of the coin holder - A MS67 in a NGC holder! The rest, as they say, is history.

This is a true gem coin with a level of preservation that is amazing given the passing years and the well documented handling (or mishandling) procedures utilized by the mint during this time frame. As noted by Rick Tomaska the highly acclaimed author of The Complete Guide to Franklin Half Dollars, "Bagmarks once again are the big roadblock to locating gems [p.116]." Well, as expected, there is not a mark to be found on this coin - none, zero, zip! The fields and devices are highly reflective giving the look, initially, of a solid proof. Under closer inspection one can see clearly that this is a truly stupendous business strike. The strike is excellent for the period, though the bell lines exhibit the usual weakness. As stated by Mr. Tomaska, "While the coins were often well struck, the strike needed to be much bolder than on Franklins of the previous decade to bring up the weaker definition of the new reworked die [p.14]" on the reverse. All of the inscriptions on the bell are clear. This is a relatively newly certified coin as Mr. Tomaska indicates that no coins have been graded in MS67 by either major service as of the 2002 printing of the second edition.
