Owner's Description
Another toned gem from David Lawrence Rare Coins. This coin appears in the image to have a mottled pattern of tone on the obverse. Though the obverse toning is more widespread, there is not a strong sense in hand of the look my image picked up. In fact, the actual color palette leans more to a light rose color. The reverse is only toned around the rim and is extremely complementary. Overall, this gem has great in hand eye-appeal.
This coin is a tale of two strikes – a well struck reverse and an above-average obverse. The bell lines are complete and show quite clearly even without magnification. Judging the obverse strike is a bit harder as most Franklin enthusiasts are aware. The design is subtle and does not lend itself to sharp-edged features. Most indication comes from the level of definition in the area of the ear and the hair curl located just in front. That being said, this coin possesses solid definition in this critical area, though I would not define it as fully struck (as best defined by Rick Tomaska in The Complete Guide to Franklin Half Dollars, 2nd edition).
A few extremely minor marks of contact and a strong overall strike set this coin firmly at a grade of MS66 FBL.
