Owner's Description

May 12, 2007 Heritage St. Louis, MO (CSNS)sig auction #434. 1936 50C Rhode Island MS68 NGC. The Rhode Island issues contributed to many arguments against continuing commemorative coinage since their debut in 1936. The entire issue was "sold out" almost immediately upon release, though collectors soon learned that sets were available from the distributor's cronies at drastically inflated prices.
The obverse of this outstanding half has a satiny appearance, while the reverse has more frosty luster. Gold, orange, and violet patina covers parts of the upper right periphery of the obverse, while the reverse has more extensive toning encircles that side, though the color is deeper on the right. When Heritage last offered this piece in April 2002, it stood alone at the top of the combined certified populations, and five years later, nothing has changed. This is the only representative graded MS68* by NGC, with none certified by PCGS (4/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.
