Owner's Description
The proof-like obverse fields highlight many light contact marks that are framed by an aqua and pink periphery. The reverse displays rich golds, pinks, and a few specks of green floating on top of watery proof-like fields. A few to many obverse contact marks prevented CAC approval.
A sharp strike, fully natural patina, and natures palette combine to produce a lovely specimen. The date has been punched over a previously entered logotype that was apparently intended for use in the production of 1867 Liberty Seated half dollars. This blundered date obverse was also used to strike Proof silver dollars of this date. Although this variety is certainly scarce as a circulation strike, I am convinced that Walter Breen's assertion that he knew of only two such examples of Breen-5478 is misleading. All Mint State 1867 Liberty Seated dollars known are the Breen-5478 Large/Small Date variety.
