Owner's Description

A fully original example with deep lavender obverse center framed with a blue and green periphery. Thick gun metal blue reverse with burnt orange peripheral toning. Superb eye appeal with a touch of obverse high point wear, a perfect example of a beautiful and naturally toned seated dollar. An early purchase from Jonathan Kern.

Although 46,500 were struck, nearly all were exported, with very few if any entering domestic circulation (as silver coins were hoarded at the time and in any event cost more than face value to produce). They were used in international trade, in this case with Central and South America as opposed to the Orient. With few examples retained stateside or later repatriated, the 1865 is much more elusive in all grades than its mintage indicates. These and other Liberty Seated dollars were in effect "trade dollars" in an era before that denomination was given that name. More than face value had to be deposited to have such pieces struck, but this made no difference, as in foreign destinations, the silver dollars were accepted based on their intrinsic value, which was more than a dollar.
