Owner's Description

Razor sharp strike with a beautiful natural golden-gray patina that blankets this fully original example. The powerful original luster illuminates the many die polish lines that are sometimes mistaken for hairlines by an untrained eye. She was awarded a CAC gold sticker and easily equals or surpasses any AU-58 I have seen.

Demand for dollars from bullion depositors remained strong in 1847 and resulted in a circulation strike mintage for the year of 140,750 pieces. This is one of the higher silver dollar mintages from the 1840s and, indeed, the 1847 is among the most frequently encountered issues in the Liberty Seated series. Q. David Bowers (1993) writes that the 1847 was the most plentiful issue that he found while sorting through a "few thousand" circulated mixed date Liberty Seated dollars that came to light as part of the Treasury Department releases of the early to mid 1960s, although he also observes that in today's market the 1842, 1843, and 1846, are a bit more plentiful in an absolute sense. How the Treasury Department came to hold quantities of Liberty Seated dollars that were made exclusively at the request of bullion depositors remains a mystery. Most survivors of this issue are in lower circulated grades through EF. Regardless of grade, most worn coins have been dipped or are outright impaired due to cleaning, surface damage and/or other problems. Like all "common" Liberty Seated dollars, the 1847 is scarce in an absolute sense and quite rare in fully original and attractive Choice AU preservation.
