Owner's Description

Republic gold 10 Pesos 1876-GW MS 63 NGC, San Jose mint, KM 123, Near-GEM Uncirculated. From an original mintage of 3,389 coins and hands down to one of the FINEST IN EXISTENCE. The fields are of resplendent quality with fully prooflike mirrors that showcase significant amounts of die rust on the obverse. The reverse seems to escape rust, but does reflect a fairly prominent die crack at 3 o’clock. The devices are fully struck and as result of their crispness, give the coin the look of a presentation piece. Interestingly, when compared to the 5 Pesos and 20 Pesos of similar design, the 10 Pesos denomination is the only example to hold an M within the bar below the denomination. This is the ex-Hammel (Stacks 09/1982, lot 805) and ex-Mayer coin (Spink Smythe 10/2008, lot 1230). This coin was struck from later state dies (with no dots after the letters in the GW initials), rather than earlier state dies (with dots after the letters in the GW initials). So, there are two varieties of this rare coin. (Note: part of the description of this note was obtained from Spink-Smythe catalog, October 2008).
