Owner's Description

The Buffalo silver dollar commemorative was one of the programs recommended in a Citizen Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee five-year plan. One of the major points it made to Congress after the collapse of the commemorative market in the mid-1990s was that coin collectors are attracted to classic and iconic designs and that programs need to incorporate them in order to be successful. The selection of the old Type I Buffalo nickel design for a silver dollar commemorative design was a stroke of marketing genius, and it produced marvelous results. The issue was developed to commemorate the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian of the Smithsonian Institution and supplement its endowment and educational outreach funds. A maximum mintage of 500,000 proof and mint state dollars was called for, and in marked departure from recent sales trends, the coins sold out. The mint state silver Buffalo has enjoyed fantastic popularity over the last 10 years. Many commemorative collectors don’t feel locked into a tight set structure, so they tend to do what works for them. That means buy what they like and pass over the rest of the coins in the series that don’t inspire them. The mint state silver Buffalo is not only an important coin to silver commemorative collectors, it’s also a desirable and affordable part of the modern Buffalo type set.
