Owner's Description
The 1327 No Regnal Year 20 Para is a rare Ottoman issue that is surrounded by debate and controversy. It is the only post-Tanzimat reform issue to lack a Regnal Year, and there is a lot of debate as to why this is and what this coin really is. Many guides consider this coin a 1909 issue, and thusly the very first of the Ottoman Nickel coins. However, there is a problem with this theory in that the Ottoman Empire struck a full run of denominations in 1909, and every single one is dated 1327/1, featuring the Regnal Year 1. If this is the 1909 issue, why was the Regnal Year left off of this single denomination? Another theory is that this coin is a multiple year error where the Regnal Years were accidentally left off of the dies or became clogged, creating the 1327 No Regnal. But if this is the case, where are these types of errors on the other Nickel Paras?
This is a mysterious issue. In examining this coin, I can confidently say that this isn't a clogged die. The Regnal Year was never there. But as to what this really is, I'm not completely certain. What I do know is that these coins are rare, and likely none exist in Mint State. The theory I favor on the issue is that the 1327 No Regnal is a pattern issue that lacks a Regnal Year due to its status as a pattern with an extremely low mintage that was later released into circulation and has next to no survival, along the lines of the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent in U.S. Coinage. The 1327 No Regnal is second only in importance to the 1327/7 issues in this series, and the ownership of one in any grade is a great accomplishment and something to be proud of. This coin took me just as long to locate as my Year 7, and that is a testament to the rarity of this enigmatic and likely undervalued issue.
Mintage-Unknown Year of Striking-Unknown, likely 1909 Year of Issue-Unkown
