Owner's Description
Central States, May 2007--------------------------------------1936 50C Long Island MS68 NGC. In the realm of 1930s commemoratives, the Long Island was an anomalous issue. It consisted of one design from a single mint; Philadelphia struck 100,053 pieces, the full amount authorized plus assay coins; the price was just $1, a far cry from the $1.50 and above that had become standard fare; and less than 20% of the original mintage was melted, which made the entire promotion unusually successful. The captivating survivor offered here is one of the best-preserved and most distinctive examples available. Magenta, cherry, and orange patina with violet accents graces parts of both sides, while the central devices are largely silver-gray. The seemingly flawless surfaces exhibit pleasing, satiny luster. NGC has awarded an MS68 grade to only two pieces, while no such coins appear in the PCGS Population Report (4/07).From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.
