Owner's Description
Lyman Allen #4.09 (KM #164) - Mintage: 1,220,000
The 1919S is the last 5 Centavos coin to be minted by the San Francisco mint until 1944. The mintage for this year is not terribly large and it must have circulated well because mint state specimens are difficult to obtain.
The grade received for this coin is extremely disappointing. The reason for the details grade is stated on the holder as "SURFACE HAIRLINES," which I suspect is a general catch-all for a variety of issues. In this case, I think some kind of chemical cleaning is suspected, but I really think the lines on the surface of the coin are due to a flaw in the metallurgy of the planchet. This is the second raw example I sent to NGC for grading. The first one came back as ungradable, and now this one with a details grade. It appears that I'll just have to keep looking for yet another to fill this slot.
