Owner's Description

Princess Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Marie of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau was born on August 31, 1880 in The Hague, Netherlands. She was the only child of King William III and his second wife, Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont. With Wilhelmina’s brothers from King William III’s previous marriage dead, Wilhelmina remained as the last surviving heir of the 400-year Orange-Nassau line. Repeal of a law forbidding female rulers allowed Wilhelmina to become queen after her father’s death on November 23, 1890. Ironically, there would not be another male monarch in the Netherlands until April 30, 2013, when Prince Willem Alexander, Prince of Orange became King of the Netherlands.

This 1897 NGC MS-66 10 gulden coin features a crownless left facing bust of Queen Wilhelmina as an 11 or 12 year old girl with her hair let down. This coins designer is W. J. Schammer and mintage figures for this date are 453,696. The NGC population report for this coin is 56 with 2 higher.

When I first started this registry set, I had an MS-64 example from my “Inspirational Ladies” custom set to fill this slot. Then, on a tip from another Collectors Society member, I purchased this set’s current coin on May 31, 2009. Now more than eight years later I am still delighted to own this magnificent coin.
