90% silver Kennedys are a one year subtype. As with most one year subtypes, PLs are hard to find – but these are even harder. 1964 is not a date well known for prooflike coins. There are 2 graded, an AU 1964, and an MS-65 64D. I have seen both, and wanted the 65PL for a while. Unfortunately, it is held in strong hands (and the one time I saw it sold, it went for extremely strong money.)

I have to settle, then, for a Star graded almost-prooflike coin. When this one was offered to me, I knew that I had to take it. In hand, the fields are quite reflective. This one only just barely missed the PL designation – I plan on submitting for designation review to try and get it upgraded. The Star is used for two reasons: first, it designates coins with above average eye appeal. Second, it is used to designate coins which have superior characteristics, but just barely miss the designation (for example, a one-sided prooflike coin would get a Star, a prooflike coin with strong mirrors but not quite enough for DPL would get a * and a PL).

The grade of 64 is fully earned by this coin. A few prominent reed marks in the obverse field keep it from a higher grade. The strike is strong, the luster flashy, and the subtle patina is original. This is a great coin.
