The Liberty Head Double Eagle is one of the longest running classic series. It was produced for nearly 60 years – and throughout that span, prooflike and deep mirror prooflike coins are available on a wide range of dates. By far the most common is 1904, with nearly half of the prooflike coins graded. Throughout the series, the vast majority of the PL coins will grade 61 or 62. A decent number grade 63, but these coins become much harder to find in 64 (and nearly impossible above that). For this set, I am trying to obtain everything with a minimum grade of 64 – which means I had to be a little patient in my search.
The coin I selected is a gorgeous 1904. It has a very strong strike, gorgeous mirrors, and plenty of sparkle. There are minimal marks throughout the fields, as expected for the grade. The color is the yellowish hue of natural gold. Slight cameo contrast sets the devices off from the mirrored fields, and produces a very attractive effect. This is a coin to be proud of!
