The State Quarter series is a very interesting item in a Type Set. Just like the Classic Commemoratives, there are about 50 different and distinct coins to choose from, each representing a very different thing. It is here, more than anywhere else in the type set, that the collector can personalize his set. Even in prooflike condition, almost all of the states are available. For my prooflike State Quarter, I chose the South Carolina quarter. Why? Simple: because that is my home state. The design itself is quite boring, and oft ridiculed. As a prooflike coin, it is definitely one of the more common states (roughly 3% of graded SC quarters are PL). But I love SC! Of all the places I have lived, Charleston is by far my favorite.

The coin is very nicely mirrored, and mark free as you would expect of a 68PL. In hand, this one shines with a deep mirrored brilliance; the pedestrian jumble of symbols reflects light with an attractive sparkle. The excellent photos by Bob Campbell show off the chrome-like reflectivity of the coin (literally, the dies at the US mint are chrome plated to make them last longer – hence the prooflike appearance of the first few coins off the die). I am pleased with this coin (although I would really like to own the single 69PL coin).
