If you want a Prooflike Wheat Cent, you have to buy a Steel Wheat Cent. There are absolutely no prooflikes graded in the wheat cent series, except for 1943S steel cents. This will obviously pose certain challenges for the prooflike type set collector….. Luckily, the steel wheat cents are available, even if they are scarce and very popular.
The example I have settled for does not quite have the full mirrors required for a PL designation, and it is graded by PCGS. Thus, this is really just a temporary placeholder until I can get the right coin for the set. However, this coin is noticeably prooflike, with reflectivity on both sides. The obverse is stronger than the reverse. With a grade of 67, the fields are flawless with very few noticeable marks or imperfections. This is a beautiful coin, it just isn’t all there for this set.
