Owner's Description
The Jackass penguin (also known as African penguins) live in colonies on the coast and islands of southern Africa. they make donkey-like braying sounds to communicate (hence the name Jackass). They can dive under water for up to 2.5 minutes while trying to catch small fish such as anchovies and sardines. In 1956, there were an estimated 141,000 pairs of African penguins. Today, scientists estimate the wild population to be only 21,000 breeding pairs.
