Owner's Description
Republic 1 Escudo, 1855/5-JB. NGC AU-58. San Jose mint, KM 98. Mintage of 4,095 pieces for both the perfect struck dates and the over dates. On this coin the second “5” is double-punched, the first attempt being noticeably too high. There is no record as to how many coins were double-punched, but there is no doubt that the clear over dates on the 1 Escudo coins of 1855 are rare. Finest known specimen with no mint state specimens on the NGC census record. This coin was obtained from the Magnificent Richard Stuart Collection, even if this slab doesn’t indicate such provenance. A bold example with considerable nice details.
