Owner's Description

When I first examined this coin I thought NGC had incorrectly identified this coin as the 1849/8 variety, which is the rarest of the 1849 half dime overdates. I thought this coin was the 1849/6 variety. Deep toning around the date helps conceal the "8" under the "9" and makes this coin hard to identify. The feature which leads me to believe that NGC has correctly identified the coin is the "4" of the date. When the coin is properly tilted in a strong light, one can see a raised piece of metal on the upright of the "4" about halfway between the crossbar and the top of the upright. This raised metal lies at a 45 degree angle. This feature is consistent with the "4" in the 1849/8 overdate photos.
