Owner's Description

The 1982 was the inaugural year for the 1oz libertad and is still going on strong today making it one of the longest and most successful sovereign bullion programs in the world. The mintage for 1982 was just over 1 million and the NGC population reports for all grades is on the higher side with 198 graded. Although the pop reports show a fair amount of the 82s being graded the highest grade was only MS67 with a pop of only 2. The coin i have is the second highest graded with a pop of 28 but the most popular grade is MS64 and MS65 with a total pop of 129 between the two. The reason for such low grades was due to the poor quality of preparing for coins and softer strikes. Most of the coins from 1982 to 1988 show this problem as can be seen with horizontal scratches around lady libertads body which is why most of the early years had such low grades. Finding a coin with a grade MS67 is a true gem of a find and MS68 is like finding a needle in a haystack. The first time a coin graded MS69 didn't take place until 1991 where only 12 have been graded.
